Moraine Lake is a glacially fed lake located in Banff National Park, approximately 14 km from the small village of Lake Louise in Alberta, Canada. Situated at an elevation of approximately 1,884 meters (6,181 feet) in the Valley of the Ten Peaks, the lake covers an area of 50 hectares (120 acres). The lake’s striking turquoise color is created by rock flour deposited by surrounding glaciers, which continuously refracts light and gives the water its distinctive blue hue.

In summer, you can paddle or stroll around Emerald Lake, visit popular landmarks such as Takakkaw Falls, Natural Bridge, and the village of Field, all accessible by road and short walking trails. The Lake O’Hara area, operated by advance reservation only, offers high-alpine lakes and more challenging hikes, making it a special summer-only trekking destination.

The rock type and the amount of it in the water causes the color to vary from lake to lake and month to month, even week to week.
